The Art of Jenny Yu

Jenny Yu is a designer and environment concept artist from Los Angeles, CA. She works for editorial, advertising, books, graphic novels, and entertainment arts. Follow her on Instagram.

Lighting, color, and shape are important aspects of my work. Being able to create magic in a single frame of an image through the cohesion of reality and fantasy is something I always want to try to convey. Life often becomes routine and tiring for us, so I want to remind myself and others that there is always magic even in the trivial drills of everyday life.

“My husband got involved with a younger woman at work.  I was relaxed about it at first.  He’s thirteen years younger than me, so I thought: ‘Shit happens.’  But then she got pregnant.  Luckily through the divorce process I had the opportunity to take over this shithole place with no heating, which I’ve turned into an art studio. And now I’m living my best life.  Everything is for sale except the pink chandelier and the dog.  Anyone is free to stop by at anytime.  You can eat or drink whatever you want.  All the young people in the neighborhood love me.  I’m the oldest person in our friend group.  Everyone else is in their twenties or thirties.  They call me Queen Mama.  I call them my adopted kids.  I always help them with their school projects and resumes and interviews.  I only ask one thing in return.  Each of them has to teach me one new thing every week: a piece of music, a trend, an idea.  Just so I can stay up to date.  Before you take the photograph, let me go inside and put on some make-up.  We were out until 2 AM last night.”

Photography by Fares Micue

Fares Micue is a self-taught fine art portrait photographer. She started photography as a hobby when she discovered Flickr back in 2009, little by little that hobby started to take more and more of her time until she realizes almost 6 years later that what has started as just an entertainment was now her biggest passion. As a self-portrait photographer, she uses her own perception to create stories based on human natural feelings like fear, love, desire or desperation. She uses a simple and clear aesthetic with a simplified color pallet and avoiding busy backgrounds and recently she has discovered a whole new world in black and white photography. She is currently based in Spain. Her Instagram.

Surreal Photography by Daniel Serva

Daniel Serva is a self-taught photographer born in Venezuela currently lives and works in Paraguay.

I’m a guy who does what he loves: taking pictures and creating alternate realities. My taste for surreal photography began one night in 2015. I wanted to draw what I felt in my notebook, tried it, but I’m not very good at drawing (yet), so I took my camera and the knowledge I had of digital manipulation and voilá. I felt so liberated and connected, I was able to express myself without even speaking (something I didn’t do before). From that moment I understood what it feels to do something with passion, I knew that my path would be photography because it makes me happy.

Multi-Layered Oil Paintings by Jacob Brostrup

Spectacularly detailed paintings by Jacob Brostrup layer indoor and outdoor scenes in luminescent colors. The artist renders each component of his oil paintings with exacting, realistic detail, but the overlapping narratives of time and place create a dreamlike state. Old-fashioned architectural features, particularly staircases and windows, are common visual elements alongside fallen trees and marshy bodies of water.
